Silk duvets
Where to find a silk duvet?
Almost all silk comforters come from China. Nowadays, this country produces 80% of the silk worldwide. There are other countries like France and Italie that don’t manufacture duvets with this material.
Silk advantages
- One of the first advantages of silk is obviously its softness. Even the word “silky” comes from this material. The quality of the gentleness of this fabric is known, well known and owns a big reputation: a diameter lower than a 1/10 part of a human hair
- An imcomparable resistance: a 1 mm thread holds 45 kg.
- Thermoregulation properties: Silk can be not also a good insulating material but a thermoregulator. It keeps you fresh during the summer and warm during the winter.
Silk disadvantages
- Absorption capacity: Silk can easily absorb up to 30 percent of its weight in water. Silk offers then a comfortable fabric for a daytime shirt. Nevertheless, a duvet covers your body while you are sleeping, and this absorption capacity becomes a problem. During the night, a normal body loses a considerable amount of water due to perspiration. A part of this perspiration goes to the mattress and the rest must be evacuated, sometimes called “evaporated” through the duvet. But if the duvet absorbs this sweat, it becomes a moisture depot and its weight increases. This is particulary delicate for people that sweat a lot. Mainteinance advices are not always given at stores, because they make a product to be more expensive!
- We haven’t found any 100% silk fabric manufacturers claiming to be “downproof”. So silk duvets don’t have an extended warranty, and feathers or down will leak at any time in the future.
Are silk duvets more natural than other duvets ?
Yes and no! Yes, silk duvets are more natural than synthetic ones. But, in most cases, these duvets aren’t more natural than those in feather or down in a cotton fabric.
