How to choose your duvet ?

In order to get the perfect duvet for you, two points have to be considered (however foolish it may seem): the duvet and you. Indeed, each person is unique and therefore, a perfect combination between you and your duvet is needed.

What are the most important criteria to cose a duvet ?

  • Movement
  • Duvet weight
  • Size
  • Fabric

Movement

One of the most important points to consider at the moment of choosing a duvet is to know if you move or not a lot during the night. If you move a lot during the night, there are three solutions for you:

  • Get a duvet with enough weight, like those filled with feather. The only thing pending is that you like the weight above you, nevertheless remember that any comforter of feather or down is lighter than old covers and bedspreads.
  • The second approach is to get a duvet enough long for your bed, in order to assure that you will be covered all night.
  • And finally, there is a third solution that is only conceived for Canada: a down comforter. This third generation down comforter allows covering the bed with a light weight, in a natural product. Contrary to a wool comforter, this duvet brings you all the comfort of a very light comforter, nice esthetics and thermoregulating properties.

The weight of the duvet

Some people need to feel weight above them to sleep well. If they make an incursion into down duvets, it is recommended to buy a duvet with a high percentaje of feather on it, starting at 25% and ending at 75%. Some others rather sleep with less weight and therefore they go from 25 to 75 % of down on their comforters. It is important to say that down offers an unequalled sensation of softness on the body.

The size

Bed size is an important subject when we are about to buy a duvet. We recommend buying a duvet in Duch a size that you can cover both sides of the bed. Considering the size and height of the mattres, it is suggested to get a duvet covering at least 14 pouces of the bed side. For example, for a 60 x 80 in mattres, a 86 x 90 in duvet can be used. This will allow to have 13 free inches in each side of the bed and 10 free inches at the front.

The fabric

The duvet fabric, measured by number of thread by inca, or “thread count”, is one of the most important criteria (among them the proper duvet quality) to consider before buying a duvet. Some people think that this criterion is essential. In a natural duvet, the higher the threadcount, the more closed the fabric and the lower the possibility of leaking (feather or down escaping through the fabric). If we can reproach a duvet for something, is a bad quality fabric, where the threadcount is weak or small. News Duvet does not advise you to buy a fabric lower than 220 threadcount. There are some online stores on the web that sell duvet shells with fabrics of less than 220 threadcount. We can surely 7predict that with this threadcount, down and feather will escape slowly and you run the risk of having your protector full of feather or down every 2 weeks, because your fabric is releasing the content everyday.

Finally, there are some researches showing that the higher the threadcount, the more the more acarus-resistant the fabric. Some duvets which threadcount exceeds 280 threadcount can be sold at 2000 USD.

Besides the threadcount, the fabric must be a cloth that has received a very special treatment. This treatment is known in the world of bedding as the “down-proof” treatment. This term makes reference to the way of making the fabric. The cloth used for feather and down duvets is not the same as that one used in sheets or covers. The main reason for difference is very simple: the fabric has to be enough open to let the duvet breathe, but enough close to prevent feathers or down escaping from inside. The “down-proof” treatment consists in an oven-equipped step at the manufacturing process of the fabric. This intense oven heat gives a very soft texture fabric that can be perceived by an expert hand. When you buy a duvet filled with feather or down, you must be sure to buy a downproof fabric, also with a high threadcount. Generally, downproof fabrics start at 264 threadcount, because under this value, the oven-equipped step is useless and the fabric will allow leaking.

In order to select the best duvet for you, movement, size, weight, price and fabric must be considered. There are no bad or good duvets for you, rather exists an adequated or unadequated one for each person.
